The Edition

The Complete Works of John Marston is being prepared by a team of fifteen scholars led by the General Editors, Martin Butler (University of Leeds) and Matthew Steggle (Sheffield Hallam University). It will be published by Oxford University Press as a four-volume print set. This will contain all Marston’s plays, poems and entertainments, critically edited in modern spelling, with full introductions, collations and commentaries. An old-spelling text is also being prepared, to appear as part of Oxford Scholarly Editions Online (OSEO).

Alongside the edition, a series of events are being mounted which allow public access to the work of the editorial team. These include a conference on attribution (January 2016), a seminar at the Shakespeare Association of America meeting (March 2017), a performance workshop at the Sam Wanamaker Theatre (July 2017), and an academic conference in Oxford in 2019.

Work on the edition is supported by a major grant from the Arts and Humanities Research Council, and involves partnerships with Birkbeck, University of London, and the Sam Wanamaker Playhouse at Shakespeare’s Globe.
