Martin Butler
Martin Butler is Professor of Renaissance Drama at the University of Leeds, and a Fellow of the British Academy. He is the author of Theatre and Crisis 1632-1642 (1984), Ben Jonson’s ‘Volpone’ (1987) and The Stuart Court Masque and Political Culture (2008). He has edited Re-Presenting Ben Jonson: Text, History, Performance (1999), and is currently completing a monograph, called Ben Jonson: Man of Letters, for Oxford University Press. With David Bevington and Ian Donaldson, he is a General Editor of The Cambridge Edition of the Works of Ben Jonson (7 vols, 2012) and The Cambridge Edition of the Works of Ben Jonson Online (2013; second release 2015). He has edited Cymbeline for the New Cambridge Shakespeare (2004, rev. 2012) and The Tempest for the Penguin Shakespeare (2007), and is completing editions of Massinger’s A New Way to Pay Old Debts for the Revels Plays, and Shirley’s The Cardinal for the complete Oxford Shirley. For the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, he was Associate Editor for performing artists 1600-1700, and he is a member of the editorial board for the Oxford Edition of Thomas Nashe.
Martin Butler is co-general editor of the Oxford Marston, for which he is editing the aristocratic entertainments.
